Free Pattern?
You know what truly annoys me?
Companies who offer free patterns on Ravelry, but in return require personal
information and the knitter to register a password to access this ‘free’
pattern.
I recently came across a scarf I
liked and the page was offering the pattern for free, or so it said.
In fact, once you clicked on ‘This
pattern is available for free’ link, you were taken away from the Ravelry page
to the company page, where the pattern with a picture was offered and a ‘download
now’ button to click. Okay, I don’t have a problem with that.
What I do have a problem with is
:
Clicking on the download button
then takes the knitter to another company page where you are requested to :
Register for free to access the following
member benefits:
- Exclusive access to our FREE download library with
free projects, tips, essays and more!
- Expert tips and advice
- The ‘company’ email newsletter filled with expert
tips, techniques, and special offers (including competitions, new
products, and giveaways).
- Exclusive notification of what’s new in the ‘company’.
Why do I need to supply personal
information and register a password if a pattern is offered for free?
Annoying!!! I’m sure I can find a ‘free pattern’ on
Ravelry that will be very similar and FREE.

Yeah, I always feel like I'm being snookered into something when they want everything but your credit card number for your "Free" pattern. Heck, Janette, you could reverse engineer just about anything from the photo. It's more work, but less aggravation
Agreed. A few minutes ago, I saw a gorgeous sweater from a Japanese company so I gave them ALL the info asked for which made me laugh as it would not accept my name. Finally got registered by fiddling with my name and now of course, I am unable to access the site as it doesn't recognize my email address.
What a waste of time.
I am with you on this. I love free patterns, so generous, but I don't want to get on an email list for it.
I agree, that has happened to me,. I don't think they should come up as 'free' really.
Totally agree, I hate that too, and avoid those patterns! They should have a different label like "encumbered" or "free, with signup" or "annoying" ;)
